Dorothy M. Scheper, 82, of Jackson, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and Jackson businesswoman, died suddenly Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
She was born July 23, 1931, in Whitewater to Clarence Edgar and Nancy Earline Snider Gloth. She and Frederick William "Fred" Scheper Jr. were married March 14, 1953, at Whitewater Methodist Church. They had been married nearly 58 years when Fred passed away Feb. 21, 2011.
Dorothy was raised in the Whitewater community and was baptized at the former Passover Methodist Church near Whitewater. She was a 1950 graduate of Delta High School.
She was employed at the former Jackson Hosiery Mill and 25 years at the former International Shoe Co. in Jackson. In 1980, she, Fred, their daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Mike Schemel Sr., opened S&S Florist and Greenhouses in Jackson. Dorothy appreciated the many friendships the flower shop helped cultivate. She was completely dedicated to serving her clients, and thoroughly enjoyed the many years she served the community. In the limited spare time she had, she liked to work in her flower garden, but she especially enjoyed her grandson and great-grandchildren. Her friends will remember the pride she had in her family.
Loving survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Mike Schemel Sr. of Jackson; a grandson, Michael (Laura) Schemel Jr. of Jackson; two great-grandchildren, Colton and Kate Schemel of Jackson; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Billy "Bill" and Irene Gloth of Colorado Springs, Colo., and James "Jim" and Sue Gloth of Chaffee, Mo.; her canine companion, Sammie; and many friends she considered dear.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a granddaughter; a sister, Janet Cook; and her parents.
