Dorothy Karnes Lell, 70, of 950 W. Rodney, died Friday, June 18, 1993, at her home.
She was born Jan. 18, 1923, in Arbyrd, to Ona W. and Dovie Collins Karnes.
She married Gerald Lell, who preceded her in death in 1967.
Lell was a professor of geography and earth science at Southeast Missouri State University, where she taught for 26 years before her retirement in May of this year.
She received her B.S. in geography in 1955 and her master's in geography in 1957 from St. Louis University. She taught the elementary and secondary schools in the Afton School District in St. Louis County before joining the faculty at Southeast Missouri State University in 1967.
Lell was a member of the Cape Girardeau branch of the American Association of University Women, where she served in various capacities, include branch president and historian.
She also served on many university committees, including the Women's Studies Committee and the International Students Committee. She served as a sponsor of Chi Alpha, and was a host family for international students for five years.
Off campus, Lell was active in the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, the Cape Girardeau Civic Center, and the Salvation Army, where was serving as vice president and acting secretary at the time of her death.
Lell was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, where she was active in church affairs, including Sunday School teacher and a member of the adult choir.
Surviving is one brother, the Rev. Douglas Karnes of Jackson, Tenn. She was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held Monday, at 10 a.m., at Ford & Sons Mount Auburn Chapel, with the Rev. Gary Brother, and Capt. Elmer Trapp of the Cape Girardeau Salvation Army, officiating.
Following the Cape Girardeau services, the body will be taken to the McDaniel Funeral Home in Senath, where visitation will be at 3 p.m. Funeral services in Senath will be held at 4 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Douglas Karnes officiating. Burial will be in the McGrew Cemetery at Senath.
