Doris Shain, 75, passed away Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015, at the family home in Cape Girardeau following a brief illness.

She was born Oct. 27, 1940, at Clifton, Tennessee, the daughter of W.S. and Mary Ellen Northcutt Nance.

Doris spent her early childhood in Tennessee, where the family farmed along the Tennessee River in an area known as Nance Bend. The family bought a farm near Sikeston, Missouri, and moved there in 1948. Doris graduated from Matthews (Missouri) High School.

Mildred Doris Nance and John Michael "Mike" Shain were married Aug. 25, 1962, in Dexter, Missouri, by the Rev. James Graham, former pastor of Doris' home church, Little Vine Baptist.

Doris worked at Western & Southern Insurance in Sikeston, until she and Mike moved to Cape Girardeau. At KSIM Radio in Sikeston and then at KFVS-TV, Doris helped gather high school football and basketball scores, and get election returns. Doris enjoyed reading, painting, stitchery and sewing. Despite fighting MS for 50 years, she was skilled at making wedding dresses and took pride in sewing clothing for retail display.

Special thanks to Dr. Rod Crist, Dr. John Hall and neurologist Dr. Becky Parks of Washington University. And bless Southeast Hospice, who made Doris' last battle peaceful and free of pain.
