FREDERICKTOWN -- Funeral service for J. Don Weiland of Fredericktown will be held at 1 p.m. today at Follis-Sonderman Funeral Home, with J. Dan Diekhoff and Kirk Schmeisser officiating. Burial will be Wednesday in Hartsburg Union Cemetery in Hartsburg, Ill.
Weiland, 58, died Saturday, April 6, 1996, at Madison Medical Center.
He was born June 25, 1937, in Hartsburg, son of John and Elizabeth Weiland. He and Glenna J. Ferguson were married June 29, 1956, in Lincoln, Ill.
Weiland was chief executive officer of both J.D. Weiland and Associates and Eagle Publications, president of both Pine Castle Enterprises and Bent Creek Developers, and chairman of the board of Bon Dente Nutrition Inc.
He was vice president of Regency Life Insurance from 1961-64 in Springfield, Ill. In 1964 he founded and was executive vice president of Old Heritage Corp., and was vice president of Agencies of Old Heritage Life Insurance Co., both in Lincoln.
In 1975 he founded and was president until 1989 of Old Heritage Advertising and Publishers Inc of St. Louis, an independent publisher of telephone directories. He sold Old Heritage to Ameritech in 1986 and served on its board three years. He also served as board member and president of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.
Weiland spearheaded the effort to submit a proposal for a Women's Correctional Facility to be located in Fredericktown. He was a board member of Cape Girardeau RCGA, Missouri's Parkland and Blue Print for Progress of Greater Cape Girardeau.
He was founder/board member of the German American Heritage Society and Blue Print for Progress in Madison County, two-term president of Fredericktown Chamber of Commerce, and chairman of Fredericktown's Economic Development Committee.
Weiland was a member of Chamber of Commerce and Elks Lodge 1875 in Farmington, Eagles Lodge 3758 and Trinity Lutheran Church in Fredericktown, Democrat Club of Madison County and Democrat Club of St. Francois County.
Survivors include his wife; a son, J. Scott Weiland of Fredericktown; two daughters, Michele McLean of St. Louis, Tamara Norton of Collinsville, Ill.; two sisters, Dorothy Aper of Hartsburg, Wilma Diekhoff of Delavan, Ill., and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
