ST. PETERS, Mo. — Don Mayfield of St. Peters passed away Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017, at St. Peters Barnes Hospital at the age of 77 years.

Don was born Jan. 30, 1940, in Mayfield, Missouri, the son of John F. and Ercy Brown Mayfield. He and Carol Allen were married in 1960, and were parents of a son, Michael (Maria) Mayfield of O’Fallon, Missouri, and a daughter, Tamey (Scott) Bradley of DeFiance, Missouri. Don later married Tonna Ponder.

Don retired from McDonnell-Douglas in 1995 after 34 years of service. After retirement, he spent his time traveling across country in his old “toy” truck or his Harley motorcycle in search of antique toys until 10 years ago, when he was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis and confined to a wheelchair.

Although his passion for collecting and selling antique toys continued, he was forced to give up riding his Harley. To the surprise of his children, he moved the Harley into his living room. When asked why, his reply was, “If I can’t ride it, I can still look at it.”

Don was a member of Bikers Against Child Abuse.

Also surviving is a grandson, Rex Bradley; granddaughters, Skye Bradley and Madison Mayfield; and a sister, Nelda (Franklin) Wilkinson of Cape Girardeau.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Eston Mayfield (1915-1995) and Marrell “Toots” Mayfield (1919-2007); and a sister, Alene Cook (1922-1990).

Following his wishes, Don was cremated. When springtime arrives, Don will make his final trip to Bollinger County. His son, Michael, on Don’s Harley, will bring his ashes to Pulliam Cemetery, where they will be placed on the grave of his parents.
