Donald David Jewel, 83, 1525 N. Henderson, died Wednesday, June 25, 1997, at the Lutheran Home.

He was born May 21, 1914, in Richland Center, Wis., son of Robert Wilson and Pearl B. Chandler Jewel. He first married Allene Gillingham Jan. 18, 1936, in Richland Center. She died in January 1964. He later married Dolly Pohnert April 16, 1965, at Thayer.

Jewel was a professor of microbiology, physiology and anatomy at Southeast Missouri State University from 1956 until retiring in 1979.

He served on the Faculty Senate, Athletic Committee 23 years, suggested the name Otahkians for women's sports, and was a sponsor of the Flying Indian and Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, and member of the university's Booster Club.

Jewel was a member of First General Baptist Church, had been a trustee, Sunday School teacher, and referee for church league basketball.

He was a member of Junior Academy of Science, Missouri Academy of Science, and had been a judge of the Science Fair since it began.

Jewel was a member of Lions Club and had served as district governor, treasurer of the local chapter, had been a member of the local, district and state boards of directors, and served on the State of Missouri Sight and Hearing Committee. He was also president of the Civic Center 10 years.

Before coming to Cape Girardeau he taught in Iowa, Kansas, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Florida. He received an honorary doctor of science from Oakland City College in Oakland City, Ind., in 1967. He served two terms on the college's board of trustees.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Deidre McMenamin of Cape Girardeau, Pamela Loftis of Castaic, Calif., Barbara Judah of Bloomington, Ind.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First General Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Griesemer officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Fancy Creek Cemetery in Richland Center.

The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
