CHAFFEE -- Funeral Mass for Gordon Samuel "Doc" Shy Jr. of Chaffee will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. The Rev. Ralph J. Duffner will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee after 4 p.m. Sunday. Parish prayers will be at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Shy, 78, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, at Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Feb. 3, 1921, at New Madrid, son of Gordon Samuel and Helen Cruchon Shy Sr. He and Mabel L. Graser were married Jan. 22, 1947.

Shy was general sales manager 16 years at Reiss Dairy in Sikeston, and then co-owned and operated Graser-Shy Supermarket 13 years in Chaffee.

He served three terms on Chaffee City Council and was a former police commissioner at Chaffee. He moved to Chaffee 31 years ago from Sikeston.

Shy was a member of St. Ambrose Church and its Men's Club, Chaffee American Legion Post 389, DAV Chapter 16 in Cape Girardeau, life member of Chaffee VFW Post 3127, past grand knight with Knights of Columbus Council 3151 at Sikeston, and associate life member of Chaffee Jaycees.

Survivors include his wife; a son, John Shy of Crookston, Minn.; four daughters, Cheryl Young of Olathe, Kan., Carol Trost of Chaffee, Mary Shy of New Madrid, Gail Thomas of Springfield, Va.; a brother, Harold Shy of Warrensburg; two sisters, Gwen Shy and Helen Grady of Sikeston; 14 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son and three brothers.
