MARBLE HILL -- Lawrence Lee "Doc" Hahn died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Hahn was born in Marble Hill Aug. 28, 1906, son of Otis and Mattie Lawrence Hahn. After the death of his mother when he was two weeks old, he was reared by his father's second wife, Nellie Bedwell. He attended Will Mayfield College in Marble Hill and Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau.
During his high school days Mr. Hahn acquired the nickname "Doc" by driving automobiles for Dr. Charles A. Sander and Dr. John A. VanAmburg on rural calls.
He served as principal of the elementary school at Marble Hill during 1929-30, and also coached a high school boys basketball team at Will Mayfield during that time.
He learned to hunt at an early age and enjoyed the sport into his later years.
In 1931 Mr. Hahn was appointed by President Herbert Hoover to be postmaster of Marble Hill, a position he held until 1935.
At the age of 15 he began working part time for F.A. and W.S. "Bill" Wiggs at the Banner Press office in Marble Hill, and started full-time employment there in 1935. He worked there nearly 50 years before retiring. During one period he and Bill Wiggs were the only Linotype operators in Bollinger County, an operation used then in newspaper work.
Mr. Hahn was a former member of Marble Hill United Methodist Church, and was currently attending Marble Hill First Baptist Church.
On Aug. 8, 1935, Mr. Hahn married Mary Louisa Hopkins. They were active members of the Bollinger County Historical Society. She preceded him in death in 1992.
He is survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Charley and Marjorie Bollinger of Marble Hill, Charles and Dixie Hopkins of Cape Girardeau, and James and Kathryn Hathaway of Redlands, Calif.
Also surviving are several cousins, nieces, nephews, and special friends Cathy, Don and Christy Bollinger of Marble Hill.
He was preceded in death by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Fred and Claire Ricketts, and Jack and Betty Hopkins.
Service will be held at Liley Funeral Home in Marble Hill Saturday, April 8, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Thomas Jackson will officiate, with the Revs. David Jackson and Fred Ritter assisting. Burial will be in Bollinger County Memorial Park Cemetery near Marble Hill.
Visitation will be Friday between 4 and 8 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Don Bollinger, Melvin Bollinger, Dale Bollinger, Larry Bollinger, Ben Burford, Tom Runnels, and nephews Jim Bollinger, Bill Hopkins, Mark Hopkins and Gregg Hopkins.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given to the Bollinger County Historical Society.
