PERRYVILLE -- Dennis W. Schaaf, 49, former publisher of The Mountain Echo newspaper, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 1994, at his home in Ironton following a lengthy illness.
He was born July 25, 1945, in Perry County, the son of Mary Naomi Tucker Schaaf of Perryville and the late Alvin Schaaf.
He married Judy Winkler on Oct. 5, 1974. She survives.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1968, with a tour of duty in Vietnam.
He was a member of the Ste. Marie du Lac Catholic Church in Ironton, the Elks and a past member of the American Legion.
He was a 1973 graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism. He served as news editor of the Perry County Republic here for four years.
He also served as editor and publisher of The Review, a weekly newspaper in Ste. Genevieve, and had been general manager of the Chillicothe Constitution Tribune. He was editor and publisher of The Chief in Donaldsonville, La., from 1984 to 1990.
He served as publisher of The Mountain Echo in Ironton from 1982 to 1984 and again from June 1990 until he retired in 1992.
He had served as a director of the Southeast Missouri Press Association, a board member of the Ste. Genevieve and Donaldsville chambers of commerce and was involved in many civic organizations.
Survivor also include two sons, Ryan and Patrick Schaaf, both of the home; one daughter, Meghan, also of the home; two sisters, Sharon Donley of Petersburg, Ill., and Gail Duvall of Perryville; four brothers, Michael Schaaf of St. Charles, Kenneth Schaaf of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Gary and Danny Schaaf, both of Perryville.
He was preceded in death by one son, his father and two sisters.
Visitation will be tonight from 4 to 9 at the Miller Family Funeral Home in Perryville with a wake service at 7. Friends may also call Tuesday from 6:30 to 9:50 a.m.
Funeral mass will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church here with the Revs. Pat Haerty and Jim Unterreiner officiating.
Burial will be in Crestlawn Cemetery in Ste. Genevieve.
