Connie Mayfield

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Constance "Connie" Cecile Bollinger Mayfield, 109, of Marble Hill died Sunday, Nov. 22, 2020, at her home. Born March 22, 1911, in Lutesville, Missouri, she was the daughter of John William and Minnie Proffer Bollinger.

She graduated from Lutesville High School in three years and began a long teaching career at the age of 17 in local rural schools. The first schools were Hame String School, Hahn Chapel School and Mayfield School.

On Jan. 31, 1932, she married Truman M. Mayfield. Both were educators. Connie taught in Missouri Bootheel schools for 10 years while working on her college degree. She taught 13 years in Missouri before moving to Illinois to teach for 33 years. She furthered her education at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Association of American University Women, a 50-year member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, and a 50-year member of Phi Lambda Theta Sorority.

Connie and her husband loved to travel over the summer months. They traveled all over Europe and all 50 states in the U.S.A. They were visiting Cuba at the time of the Cuban revolution.

She was a member of the Marble Hill United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school.

Connie had no children, but was a mother figure to her brothers, sisters, numerous nieces and nephews. Everyone who met Connie and talked to her walked away knowing they met a friend for life. She was so knowledgeable about history and events that happened through the years.

She is survived by two sisters, Mary Lou Hansen and Hazel Hutson, and a brother, Dick Bollinger, all of Marble Hill.

Six brothers, Ike, Bill, Charlie, Florence, Carl and Truman Bollinger; a sister, Belva Banta; and her husband, Truman Mayfield, predeceased her.

Visitation and funeral services will be on Wednesday at Hutchings Funeral Chapel in Marble Hill. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time. Funeral service will start at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Elijah Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Baker Cemetery near Marble Hill.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
