MCCLURE, Ill. -- Cleo S. Whorton Jr., 80, of McClure died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at Crofton Convalescent Center in Crofton, Md. He was born May 10, 1920, in Farmersville, Iowa, son of Cleo S. and Grace Pugh Whorton. Whorton was a logger, author of "Shall We Save Democracy for Our Grandchildren" and focus of the documentary film "Timber." He owned and operated the sawmill in McClure since 1988...

MCCLURE, Ill. -- Cleo S. Whorton Jr., 80, of McClure died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at Crofton Convalescent Center in Crofton, Md.

He was born May 10, 1920, in Farmersville, Iowa, son of Cleo S. and Grace Pugh Whorton.

Whorton was a logger, author of "Shall We Save Democracy for Our Grandchildren" and focus of the documentary film "Timber." He owned and operated the sawmill in McClure since 1988.

Survivors include a son, Dan Whorton of Columbia, Md.; a daughter, Stacey Whorton of Chicago; a brother, Don Whorton of Marion, Iowa; two sisters, Vivian Spielman of Concord, N.C., Virginia Schrock of Orinda, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 22 at Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque, Iowa.

Beall Funeral Home in Bowie, Md., is in charge of arrangements.
