MILFORD, Del. -- Chester "Chet" Pheil Walter, 89, of Milford passed away Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, Delaware.
Chet was born in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, March 31, 1934, to the late Chester Sellers and Mary Adela Pheil Walter.
Chet was a proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He was stationed in Japan and served in radio communications at the end of the Korean War.
After his service, he came home and resumed his 42-year career with Bell Telephone Co., working in many roles throughout his time there. More recently, he volunteered at Bayhealth Hospital in Milford and Milford Senior Center.
Chet prioritized staying active throughout his lifetime, whether fly-fishing and raising a beautiful garden in his younger year, or more recently by singing and dancing to his favorite music and his thrice weekly workouts at Planet Fitness in Milford. However, he still was known to enjoy his favorite snack, Sweetzels Spiced Wafers. He loved watching birds at his bird feeders and playing board games with his family. He was known by many to have a cheerful and bright personality, possessing a great sense of humor. Above all else, he was an outstanding father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Chet will be greatly missed by his daughters, Victoria "Vicky" Shockley and husband, Wayne, of Jackson and Lisa Marie Walter of Salt Lake City; brother, Ed Walter of Lansdale; grandchildren, Ashley Donnelly, Shannon Donnelly, Trista Donnelly and Cori Johnson; and his great-grandchildren, Orion and Jocelyn.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Dorothy Marie Richards Walter; brother, Earl Walter; sister, Anna Walter; and granddaughter, Katrina Krumrie.
Services and interment are private.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be sent in Chet's honor to The Wounded Warrior Project, woundedwarriorproject.org/donate.
Arrangements are in the care of Berry-Short Funeral Home in Milford.
