Charles "Ottie" Winstead, 78, 815 Rodney Vista, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1997, at Ratliff Care Center.
He was born Sept. 17, 1918, in Providence, Ky., son of Charlie and Katherine McNeely Winstead. He and Eileen Branch were married Oct. 16, 1937, at Marble Hill. She died April 9, 1992.
Winstead was employed by B&W Transport 20 years, and then was a carpenter and electrician. He was a member and deacon of First General Baptist Church, and served on the board of trustees. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II, receiving a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
Survivors include a son, Dean Winstead of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Jayne Hopkins of Cape Girardeau; four sisters, Ruby Brown, Roma Merritt and Maudeline Cook of Cape Girardeau, Rosa Hardwick of Fenton; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel from 4-8 p.m. today.
Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the chapel, with Pastor David Griesemer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park.
