GREENBRIER -- Funeral for Charles Leland Whitehead of Cottage Hills, Ill., will be held at 1 p.m. today at Balch Chapel Church. The Revs. James Johns and Craig Moore will officiate, with burial in the church cemetery.

Whitehead, 71, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at St. Anthony's Health Center in Alton, Ill.

He was born Aug. 30, 1926, at Greenbrier, son of Henry and Bertha Borders Whitehead. He and Lawanda Love were married April 30, 1976, in Edwardsville, Ill.

Whitehead was a self-employed auto mechanic, and an automatic pin spotter mechanic at Airport Plaza Bowl in Bethalto, Ill.

He attended Gateway Worship Center Bethalto Assembly of God Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Terry Whitehead of Madison, Ala.; two stepdaughters, Deborah Brewton of Penrose, Colo., Tina Tinsley of Cottage Hills; a sister, Erma Ladd of Advance; a grandson; a great-grandchild; four stepgrandchildren; and two great-stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother and four sisters.

Gray Funeral Home in Wood River, Ill., is in charge of arrangements.
