Charles W. Ramsey, 80, of Jackson passed away Saturday, July 14, 2007, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Jan. 17, 1927, in rural Chaffee, Mo., son of the late Clyde J. and Lillian E. Statler Ramsey. He and Dorothy Macke-Wilson were married July 10, 1970, in Jackson.
Charles graduated from the former College High School in Cape Girardeau in 1945. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on June 4, 1945. He worked as a bookkeeper at Command Headquarters in Vienna, Austria, from December 1945 to December 1946. He then served with occupation forces after the war.
Upon returning home, Charles began a 33-year career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., retiring in 1984. After retirement, he briefly worked as a bus driver for St. Paul Lutheran School.
He was a member of New McKendree United Methodist Church and Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158, both in Jackson. He was also a member of Telephone Pioneers and formerly served as shop steward for Local CWA.
Loving survivors include his wife of 37 years, Dorothy, of Jackson; three sons, Robert (Cindy) Ramsey of Jackson, Jim Ramsey of Nashville, Tenn., Tom (Chris) Wilson of St. Louis; two daughters, Vicki (Dan) Winschel of Cape Girardeau, Terri Vargulich of St. Charles, Mo.; a brother, James C. (Betty) Ramsey of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Shirley Kurre of Lexington Park, Md.; and nine grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a great-granddaughter.
Friends may call from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 16, at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, at the funeral home, with the Rev. John Rice officiating.
Burial will follow at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.
