SIKESTON -- Funeral mass for Charles M. Mitchell Sr. of Sikeston will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Francis Xavier Church. Msgr. William Stanton and the Rev. Byron Edwards will officiate, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Nunnelee Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mitchell, 67, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1992, at Missouri Delta Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 21, 1924, at New Madrid, son of Clay A. and Lucille C. Proffit Mitchell. He and Mary Etta Cravens were married April 26, 1948, in New Madrid.

Mitchell formerly owned and operated Sikeston Fruit and Produce Co., and for the past 29 years was owner and broker of Charles M. Mitchell Realtors.

He served 20 years on the Sikeston Housing Authority, and was instrumental in bringing the Wendell apartment building project to Sikeston. He also served as a consultant to the Sikeston Industrial Development Corp.

Mitchell was a member and past president of Sikeston Board of Realtors, served on the Missouri Association of Realtors State Executive Committee, was past president of Sikeston Jaycees and past vice president of Missouri Jaycees.

He was a member and past president of Sikeston Lions Club, past district governor of Lions International, was a charter member of Sikeston Elks Lodge, member of Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce and served on its board of directors.

Mitchell was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church and KC Council 3151. He received Sikeston Jaycee Man of the Year Award in 1956, and was Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1975.

Survivors include his wife; a son, C. Mont Mitchell Jr.; two daughters, Mary Steward and Terri Matthews, all of Sikeston; two brothers, Robert and John "Jack" Mitchell of Sikeston; 10 grandchildren, and a great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by a brother and sister.
