CHARLES `GUS' ATERS

EAST PRAIRIE -- Gus Aters, 75, of East Prairie died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1992, at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.

He was born Aug. 1, 1917, in Mt. Vernon, Ind., the son of Charles and Sophia Reed Aters. On Oct. 10, 1936, he married Marie Johnson, who survives of the home.

He had lived in Mississippi County and New Madrid County most of his life and was a member of the First General Baptist Church in East Prairie.

Other survivors include seven sons, R.J. Aters of Plano, Ill., Bobby, Jimmy, and Floyd Aters of East Prairie, Ricky Aters of Bertrand, Paul Aters of Irvine, Calif. and Terry Aters of New Madrid; five daughters, Alice Organ of Dalton, Ill., Rosetta Branam, Shirley Johnson, Thelma Wasson and Penny Simpkins, all of East Prairie; two sisters, Meca Shaw of Potosi and Emmy Carson of Sikeston; 37 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the Shelby Funeral Home in East Prairie, where funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Keith Atchley and the Rev. Dave Bowden will officiate, and burial will be in East Prairie Memorial Park Cemetery.
