TAMMS, Ill. -- Charles F. Betts, 81, of Murray, Ky., formerly of Tamms and Sebring, Fla., died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011, at Hickory Woods Home.

He was born March 12, 1930, in Tamms, to Lark and Mary Schillings Betts. Charles and Dorothy Davis were married Nov. 28, 1951. She preceded him in death June 25, 2006.

Charles was a construction worker and farmer. He enjoyed gardening and fishing. He was a lifetime member of Carroll P. Foster VFW Post 3455.

He proudly served his country during the Korean conflict.

Survivors include two sons, Charles (Jennifer) Betts of Tamms, Roger (Paula) Betts of Olive Branch, Ill.; two daughters, Mary (Rodney) Henderson of Murray, Ky., Joan (Rick) Vick of Tamms; seven grandchildren, Jaime Hodges, Derek Betts, Aliesha and Brooklyn Betts, Jason and Melinda Henderson and Rachel Johnson; and eight great-grandchildren.

Also a brother, Wesley Betts of Brighton, Ill.; five sisters, Mary Overmeyer of Bethalto, Ill., Bernelda Burney, Carmelita Betts and Edna Gold of Wood River, Ill., and Alta Smith of Carbondale, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; three sisters, Leona, Lavedoth and Vernetta; five brothers, Clifford, Robert, Lark, John and Dwight.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to service time Sunday at Crain Funeral Home in Tamms.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Lacie Betts officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery in Jonesboro, Ill., with military honors by VFW Post 3455 and flag presentation by National Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Cemetery and will be accepted at the funeral home.
