SIKESTON -- Catherine Matthews, 88, formerly of Sikeston, died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 1994, at Mt. Vernon Nursing Center in Alexandria, Va. She was born March 12, 1906, in St. Louis, daughter of Robert Francis and Grace Robison Avery. She and James Emory Matthews were married March 29, 1930. He died Feb. 26, 1954...

SIKESTON -- Catherine Matthews, 88, formerly of Sikeston, died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 1994, at Mt. Vernon Nursing Center in Alexandria, Va.

She was born March 12, 1906, in St. Louis, daughter of Robert Francis and Grace Robison Avery. She and James Emory Matthews were married March 29, 1930. He died Feb. 26, 1954.

Matthews taught history at Sikeston High School from 1956 until retiring in 1971. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Kingshighway Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, Chapter HB of PEO, all in Sikeston, and Retired Teachers Association of Missouri.

Survivors include a son, James Matthews Jr. of Picayune, Miss.; a daughter, Elizabeth Boling of Alexandria; a sister, Elizabeth Denny of St. Louis; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral srvice will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Charles E. Buck officiating. Private burial will follow in Sikeston City Cemetery.

Friends may call at the church from 9 a.m. to service time.

Nunnelee Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
