Catherine Hahs, 94, of Cape Girardeau died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, at Chateau Girardeau. She had been a resident of the Health Center for the last 16 years.
She was born Jan. 22, 1923, in Cape Girardeau to the late Henry and Hilda Kasten Schrader.
She attended Southeast Missouri State University, where she was a member of the Clio sisterhood. She graduated from St. Luke's School of Nursing and worked at Seabaugh Clinic in Cape Girardeau for many years.
She and M. Luther Hahs were married Nov. 5, 1944, in Cape Girardeau. He preceded her in death May 7, 2008. Much of her life was centered on caring for him, after a life-altering medical condition left him dependent upon her, a position she was honored to fill.
In 1977, she and Luther purchased a home in Sun City, Arizona, giving them many winters of good friends and beautiful weather.
She was a charter member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, where she served on the altar guild and sang in the choir. She and Luther endowed a speech-therapy scholarship at Southeast Missouri State University, and they were instrumental in the founding of Saxony Lutheran High School. She was also a member of the BI chapter of PEO.
Survivors include a son, David (Candy) Hahs of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Martha (Carl) Kieffer of San Tan Valley, Arizona; four grandchildren, Brandon (Marilyn) and Clayton (Miste) Hahs and Michael (Barbara) and Kara Piazza; seven great-grandchildren, Samuel and Ella Hahs, Andrew, Luke and Natalie Hahs and Hunter and Jayden Piazza-Smith.
Catherine's family is extremely grateful for the kind, compassionate care given for many years to Catherine and Luther by the staff at Chateau Girardeau. The family also is very grateful for the 20-plus years of care Luther and Catherine's personal caregiver, Lisa Spies, faithfully provided.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. John Dehne officiating. Burial will be at Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
Memorial contributions may be given to Trinity Lutheran School Foundation, St. Andrew Lutheran Church or Saxony Lutheran High School.
