Carl G. Meyer, 84, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born July 26, 1916, in Cape Girardeau, son of Charles H.W. and Cora Bingenheimer Meyer. He and Millie Rone were married Feb. 18, 1945, in Boston.

Meyer attended Southeast Missouri University for three years. He was a member of the university's first basketball championship team in 1935-1936.

He played professional baseball two years in the Southeastern and Evangeline leagues and was inducted into the Southeast Missouri Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990.

He served in the U.S. Navy for 45 months. He went to work at Farmers and Merchants Bank, later Boatman's Bank, on Dec. 7, 1945, and retired Dec. 31, 1980, as senior vice president and trust officer. He was a member of the bank's board of directors from 1975 until 1988.

Meyer served on the Cape Girardeau school board for five years and was a member of the Tower Club, the Lions Club and the Cape Girardeau Country Club. He was an avid golfer.

He was a member of the Evangelical United Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife; one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Cathy Meyer of St. Louis; two grandchildren, Dana Meyer and Andy Meyer of St. Louis; one brother, Robert Meyer of Dexter; and one sister-in-law, Lila Hill of Memphis.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel. The Rev. James Caughlan will officiate, with entombment in the Cape County Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to the Evangelical United Church of Christ or the Centenary United Methodist Church.
