SEDGEWICKVILLE, Mo. -- Surrounded by his loving family, Carl C. Mayfield, 98, of Sedgewickville passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau. SEDGEWICKVILLE, Mo. -- Surrounded by his loving family, Carl C. Mayfield, 98, of Sedgewickville passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born March 17, 1920, in Mayfield, Missouri, to W.D. and Hannah Green Mayfield. The family moved to Sedgewickville when Carl was 3 weeks old, where Carl resided his entire life.

He and Trula E. Seabaugh were married July 11, 1942, at the Oliver House in Jackson. They had been married 62 years when Trula passed away Sept. 18, 2004. Two sons were born to their union, Donald and Billy. Donald died at the age of 16, as a result of a fatal car accident. Billy passed away in 2016.

Carl was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Force on Aug. 18, 1942. He was a sergeant with the 5th Air Force in the South Pacific. He received the Good Conduct Medal and was awarded a Bronze Star for the New Guinea campaign. He was honorably discharged Dec. 19, 1945.

Carl and Trula farmed many years near Sedgewickville. Carl also worked 15 years at the former Crites Appliance and Plumbing in Sedgewickville before becoming a pipefitter with Local 562 in St. Louis, retiring in 1984.

He was a lifelong active member of Sedgewickville United Methodist Church, serving on the church council and as Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher and president of the Men's Club. He also kept busy in community work and was instrumental in advocating for the building of Meadow Heights School between the communities of Patton, Missouri, and Sedgewickville. He served on the Sedgewickville Town Board several years and helped implement the Garden of Memories Cemetery. He was also a member of Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 in Jackson for over 50 years.

Carl was an accomplished gardener of flowers and vegetables, often sharing his harvests with his friends.

Loving survivors include two grandchildren, Mike (Jessica) Mayfield of Columbia, Missouri, and Tim (Julie) Mayfield of Rolla, Missouri; two stepgrandchildren, Sissy Korich of Rolla and Jeremey Taylor of Missouri; three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Jayden and Holden Mayfield; two great-stepgrandchildren, Morgan Korich and Hannah Taylor; a daughter-in-law, Florene Mayfield of Rolla; and a former daughter-in-law, Kay Mayfield Mungle of Cape Girardeau.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Trula Mayfield; two sons, Donald Kent and Billy Gene Mayfield; two brothers, Earl and Zelma "Tamp" Mayfield; and two sisters, Fern Johnston and Faye Owen.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson and from 10 a.m. to service time Monday at Sedgewickville United Methodist Church.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Revs. Jimmie Corbin and Roger Cary officiating. Burial will follow at Sedgewickville Cemetery.
