Carl Friese

Carl Melvin Friese, 77, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at Missouri Veterans Home.

He was born Jan. 5, 1926, in Cape Girardeau, son of Burnie and Lillie Ethel Crites Friese. He and Madge Walton were married Aug. 12, 1947, in Cape Girardeau.

Mr. Friese attended Central High School, and received education credits from the University of Missouri Extension Division.

He was with the surveying branch of St. Louis District Corps of Engineers in 1943 and from 1946 to 1950. He worked in land surveying 1951 to 1952, was assistant to the Cape Girardeau city engineer from 1952 to 1962, owned Carl M. Friese Surveying from 1962 until retiring in 1999, and was Cape Girardeau County surveyor from 1965 to 1976.

Mr. Friese was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church and past member of the board and building committee; was commander of American Legion Post 63 two terms; member of VFW Post 3838; was a former Boy Scout leader and the first Boy Scout leader at St. Andrew Church.

He was a member of Missouri Association of Registered Land Surveyors, past member of the board of directors and past vice president of Missouri Association of Registered Land Surveyors, and was charter president of Southeast Missouri Chapter of Missouri Association of Registered Land Surveyors.

A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, Mr. Friese served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1944 to 1946 and from 1950 to 1951.

Survivors include his wife, Madge Friese; two sons, Michael M. Friese of Sugarland, Texas, Stanley Friese of Urbana, Ill.; a daughter, Lisa Gaye Hoppmann of Paducah, Ky.; a brother, Norval Friese of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Doris Hartle of St. Charles, Mo.; four grandchildren, Michael Friese Jr. of Rockwell, Texas, Madelline Alderding of Australia; Kyle and Cole Hoppmann of Paducah; two great-grandchildren, Lauren Friese and Mason Friese of Rockwell; three great-stepgrandchildren, Taylor and Kayla Bearden, and Caitlin McKeon, all of Rockwell.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Carlston "Gene" Friese.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Paul Short officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park, with graveside service by American Legion Post 63.

Memorials may be made to Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau or National Parkinson Foundation.
