SIKESTON -- Byron Ernest Curtner, 77, of Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 1996, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. He was born Jan. 20, 1919, in Scott County, son of Clarence and Edith Ellen Shafer Curtner. He and Minnie E. Davis were married May 23, 1946. She died June 5, 1972...

SIKESTON -- Byron Ernest Curtner, 77, of Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 1996, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Jan. 20, 1919, in Scott County, son of Clarence and Edith Ellen Shafer Curtner. He and Minnie E. Davis were married May 23, 1946. She died June 5, 1972.

Curtner had worked for Ray Clinton Construction Co. He attended Calvary Temple Church, and was a member of Henry Meldrum VFW Post and Disabled American Veterans in Sikeston. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received a Purple Heart.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Thebeau of Ballwin; a stepdaughter, Sherley Chamberlain of Dexter; three stepsons, Elmer Spitler of Mayfield, Ky., Burleigh Spitler of Miner, Kenneth Spitler of Bertrand; three brothers, Charles and Larry Curtner of Sikeston, Donald Curtner of Stonington, Ill.; two sisters, Bessie Johnson of Sikeston, Glenda Ables of Springfield; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Friends may call at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel from 5-8 p.m. today.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the chapel, with the Rev. Amos Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
