ROLLA, Mo. -- Billy Gene Mayfield, 69, of Rolla passed away Monday, July 18, 2016.
Bill was born April 24, 1947, to Carl and Trula Seabaugh Mayfield in Cape Girardeau and was raised in Sedgewickville, Missouri.
Bill attended Patton (Missouri) High School and upon graduation enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving four years with one year in Vietnam.
Upon returning home, he enrolled at Southeast Missouri State University, where he graduated with a degree in secondary education. Bill was in the last graduating class that was awarded lifetime teaching degrees.
Due to an opportunity that presented itself, he entered the United States Postal Service in 1973 where he spent 33 years. During his postal career, Bill was appointed to several positions. Some included station manager in Florissant, Missouri, officer in charge in Jefferson City, Missouri, postmaster in Farmington, Missouri, postmaster in Flat River, Missouri, and postmaster in Rolla. He retired as postmaster in Rolla in 2007.
Bill was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan and, as a kid, spent many an evening with a transistor radio pressed to his ear while lying outside in the porch glider. He was an avid sports memorabilia collector and could tell you with one look what the value of something was.
Bill loved his home and loved his family. Bill and Florene got the opportunity to travel and see many beautiful places in the United States before heath issues arose. He said many times, "Who would ever have thought a little ole guy from Sedgewickville would get a chance to be here?"
Bill also believed strongly in "whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish." Bill was baptized at an early age and believed in eternal life in heaven.
Bill will leave a huge hole in our heart as a husband, father, son and PaPa, but we know we will see him again in heaven.
Bill is survived by his wife, Florene Mayfield of Rolla; his father, Carl Mayfield of Sedgewickville; a son, Mike Mayfield and wife Jessica and their sons, Zach and Jayden of Columbia, Missouri; a son, Tim Mayfield and wife Julie and their son, Holden of Rolla; a daughter, Sissy Korich and husband Jim and their daughter, Morgan of Rolla; and a granddaughter, Hannah Taylor of Bourbon, Missouri.
Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Trula Mayfield, and by one brother, Donald Kent Mayfield.
A visitation for family and friends will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
