EAST PRAIRIE -- Bill Skaggs, 69, of East Prairie died Friday, March 22, 1996, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau due to an extended illness.
He was born Oct. 21, 1926, in New Madrid County, son of Lee and Alma Woodruff Skaggs. He married Norma Roderique on Oct. 23, 1958, in Memphis, Tenn.
Skaggs had lived most of his life in Mississippi County, where he was a member of the First Church of God in East Prairie. He was the 1995 East Prairie Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year, a former member of the East Prairie City Council, a two-term president of the East Prairie Kiwanis Club. He was serving as president of the 60-Plus Nutrition Center Board.
Skaggs was retired from Burkart Foam in Cairo, Ill., and was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a tank commander.
Survivors include his wife; a son, John F. Skaggs of Tamms, Ill.; a sister, Norma Jean Marshall of Charleston; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, two daughters, two brothers and a sister.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the Shelby Funeral Home in East Prairie.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with Larry Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Dogwood Cemetery.
