J.E. "Bill" Shrum, 83, of Cape Girardeau passed away Monday, June 24, 2013, at the Missouri Veterans Home.

He was born Aug. 10, 1929, in Lutesville, Mo., son of Jesse E. and Francis Black Shrum. He and Mable Ehlers were married Oct. 23, 1954.

Bill was a graduate of Lutesville High School.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Army from June 12, 1951, until being honorably discharged May 27, 1953. He had attained the rank of corporal.

Bill was a life member of Cape Girardeau VFW Post 3838 and a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau, where he served as a trustee, elder, on various committees through the years and a member of the men's club.

Bill also worked many years in sales, service and repair for Tinsley Appliance, retiring in 1994.

Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Mable; a son-in-law, John Hill of Jacksonville, Fla.; two grandsons, John E. and Scott A. Hill of Jacksonville; three sisters, Joy Baker of Jackson, Lola Urhahn of Oran, Mo., and Jean Gilliland of Jackson; and two brothers, Jim Shrum of Cape Girardeau and Sam Shrum of Jackson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a loving daughter, Deborah Jean "Debbie" Hill on Jan. 22, 2012; two brothers, John "Clyde" and Jacob "Jake" Shrum; and two sisters, Katherine Hammer and Anna A. Korzen.

Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until time of service Thursday at Trinity Church in Cape Girardeau.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Douglas Breite officiating. Interment will be at 2 p.m. in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield, with full military honors.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to Trinity Lutheran School or Southeast Hospice.
