CHAFFEE, Mo. -- William W. "Bill" Rhodes, 82, of Chaffee passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. He was born Aug. 13, 1930, in Puxico, Mo., to John C. and Margaret Hope Hickman Rhodes. He and Alice Ann Mosley were married Jan. 30, 1953. She preceded him in death Feb. 22, 1993. CHAFFEE, Mo. -- William W. "Bill" Rhodes, 82, of Chaffee passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Aug. 13, 1930, in Puxico, Mo., to John C. and Margaret Hope Hickman Rhodes. He and Alice Ann Mosley were married Jan. 30, 1953. She preceded him in death Feb. 22, 1993. He and Shirley Jones Gardiner were married Aug. 20, 1994.

Bill was a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, having served in the Korean War.

He was an engineer with Frisco Railroad and Burlington Northern Railroad in Chaffee 40 years, retiring in 1992. He was of the Methodist belief. Bill was a lifetime member of Chaffee VFW Post 3127 and Chaffee Elks Lodge 1810.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley of the home; three sons, Mark Rhodes of Chaffee, Jon (Carol) Rhodes of Columbia, Mo., and Bill Rhodes of Chaffee; a daughter, Laura (Carl) Nurnberg of Wildwood, Mo.; a stepson, Scott (Margie) Gardiner of Hernando, Miss.; six grandchildren, Mike (Kim) Rhodes, Andrew Rhodes, Tyler (Amanda) Baert, Amanda Rhodes, Stephanie Rhodes and Rocky (Annette) Portel; six stepgrandchildren, Jeffrey, Paul, Mitch and Sam Gardiner, Len and Lane Fagan; and four great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Rhodes; a stepdaughter, Laurie Gardiner Fagan; and a sister, Phyllis Wilkinson.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee. A VFW service will be at 7 p.m.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel, with the Rev. Patrick Tankersley officiating. Burial will be in Puxico City Cemetery, with full military honors presented by Missouri Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.
