ANNA, Ill. -- William Farris "Bill" Carter, 95, of Plainview, Texas, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, in Plainview.

He was born May 13, 1907, in Cypress, Ill., son of William Luther and Annie Isom Carter. He first married Ann L. Carter, who died Dec. 5, 1967. He later married Evelyn Jackson.

Carter played center for a semi-pro football team in Southern Illinois in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He had owned the Chrysler Agency in Anna.

He moved to Plainview in 1942. He was employed by Newman Motor Co. and later was associated with Green Machinery 25 years as head of the Chrysler Industrial Engine Department. After retiring he was a greeter with Wal-Mart 12 years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Plainview.

Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Nancy Whitfield, Luan Brunson-Haynes, Sally Montgomery, Jerre Knoblock and Kay Duncan; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Anna Cemetery.

Crain Funeral Home in Anna is in charge of arrangements.
