Betty Smith

Betty L. Smith, 78, of Cape Girardeau died Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at her home.

She was born May 31, 1935, in Memphis, Tenn., to Robert Wesley and Ruby Edwards Smith. She and Wayne A. Smith were married Sept. 10, 1957, in Hernando, Miss. He died May 31, 2008.

Betty was a sales clerk for 16 years at Kmart in Cape Girardeau. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, AARP, Fish and VFW Post 3838 Auxiliary. She had volunteered at Southeast Hospital in the gift shop and at Doctors Park Plaza.

Survivors include a son, Michael Wayne Smith of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Melody Ann (Todd) Boyd of Lake Jackson, Texas; three brothers, Bill J. Smith of Atlanta, Paul Clemons Sawyer of Memphis and James Vernon (Janet) Sawyer of Olive Branch, Miss.; a sister, Joan Sawyer of Memphis; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Lewis Todd officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield.
