Betty E. "Bessie" Carlen, 88, 1127 Merriwether, died Thursday, March 3, 1994, at her home. She was born Dec. 13, 1905, at Ardeola, daughter of Charles and Grace Hunt Willeford. She and Gilbert Lehmann were married in 1920 in Cape Girardeau. He died Nov. 18, 1946. She later married Clarence Carlen in Cape Girardeau...

Betty E. "Bessie" Carlen, 88, 1127 Merriwether, died Thursday, March 3, 1994, at her home.

She was born Dec. 13, 1905, at Ardeola, daughter of Charles and Grace Hunt Willeford. She and Gilbert Lehmann were married in 1920 in Cape Girardeau. He died Nov. 18, 1946. She later married Clarence Carlen in Cape Girardeau.

Carlen had lived in Cape Girardeau most of her life.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Moore of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Vi Vertrees of Castro Valley, Calif.; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother and sister.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Chapel after 11 a.m. Sunday.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Cy Smith officiating. Burial will be in Lorimier Cemetery.
