CHARLESTON -- Bess M. "Aunt Bessie" Lawrence, 73, of Charleston, died Thursday, March 30, 1995, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. She was born July 24, 1921, in Indianapolis, Ind. CHARLESTON -- Bess M. "Aunt Bessie" Lawrence, 73, of Charleston, died Thursday, March 30, 1995, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

She was born July 24, 1921, in Indianapolis, Ind. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School here, and received a bachelor's degree from Lincoln University in Jefferson City.

Lawrence began teaching in Charleston schools in 1938, and then taught in St. Louis Public Schools from 1957 until retiring in 1985. She was a member of Perry Chapel AME Church and NAACP in Charleston.

Survivors include a niece, Gail Pang, and a nephew, Marshall Currin Jr., of Charleston.

Friends may call at Sparks Funeral Home from 6-7 p.m. Sunday.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Perry Chapel Church, with Elder Steve Betts officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
