JACKSON -- Graveside service for Bertha C. Hoffmeister of Jackson was held Wednesday at Memorial Park in Cape Girardeau. Dr. Neil Stein officiated.

McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson was in charge of arrangements.

Hoffmeister, 87, died Monday, Nov. 27, 1995, at her home.

She was born Jan. 22, 1908, in Arcola, Ill., daughter of Edmond and Mary Ann Reed Cuskaden. She and Joseph H. Hoffmeister were married in November 1931. He died July 13, 1968.

Hoffmeister received a degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University. She taught 43 years at the former Marquette, Fornfelt, Dogwood and Fruitland Schools, and Jackson R-2 Elementary School, retiring in 1974.

She served 15 years on the Jackson School Board, and received the Pioneer in Education Award from the state of Missouri. She was a member of Missouri Retired Teachers Association, lifelong member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau, and was a former 4-H leader.

Survivors include a son, Joe Robert Hoffmeister of Jackson; a grandson, granddaughter, and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter and four brothers.
