Bernadette Lorena Meyer Landis, 76, of Scott City passed away Friday, March 31, 2023, at her home, in the arms of her loving husband and surrounded by her children, grandchildren, son-in-law, future daughter-in-law and dog, Tipper, after a long and courageous battle with stomach cancer.

She was born Dec. 14, 1946, "in a suitcase on the way to the hospital" in Cape Girardeau. She is the ninth child of 14 born to Ben and Lorena Essner Meyer of Benton, Missouri.

Bernie was united in marriage to Wayne Landis on Nov. 23, 1968, in Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Union County, Illinois, and again Dec. 24, 1982, in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City.

Bernie was a 1964 graduate of Kelly High School in Scott County. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City. She and her husband were owners-operators for 30 years of The County Seat Cafe in Benton, where she was well known for her hospitality and homemade pies. Her greatest enjoyments in life were family, family history and family reunions.

Loving survivors include her husband, Wayne Landis of Scott City; daughter, Tracy (John) Carman; son, Jason (Mary Clubb) Landis; five grandchildren, Braden Carman, Landen Carman, Macy Carman, Lilyan Landis and Clara Landis; and siblings, Marie (Carl) Rankin, Laverne (Anwar) Zubairi, Helen (John) Shreckenberg, Margie (Bob)Stull, Carolyn (Tom) Schumacher, Jane (Joe) Meyer, Tom (Peggy) Meyer, Charlie (Ronnie) Meyer, Eileen (Dwight) Gates and Denise (Bob) Walton.

Besides her parents, Ben and Lorena Meyer, Bernie was preceded in death by her siblings, Rita (Bill) Mansell, John (Ruth Ann) Meyer and Gene (Kathy) Meyer.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Tom Wilk officiating. Interment will follow in Lightner Cemetery at Scott City.

The Landis family would like to thank her many family, friends and organizations for their support and prayers. Special thanks to the staff of Southeast Hospice for keeping her comfortable and pain-free during her final days.
