Bernice H. Quade, 80, of Jackson, passed away Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at her home. She was born May 16, 1929, in Burfordville, daughter of Alvin and Minnie Sperling Kaufman. She and Norman W. Quade were married July 3, 1947. He passed away Jan. 9, 1980...

Bernice H. Quade, 80, of Jackson, passed away Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at her home.

She was born May 16, 1929, in Burfordville, daughter of Alvin and Minnie Sperling Kaufman. She and Norman W. Quade were married July 3, 1947. He passed away Jan. 9, 1980.

Bernice attended grade school at the old school building in Burfordville and went on to graduate from Jackson High School.

She was a lifelong member of St. James United Church of Christ in Tilsit. She was very active in the church and was currently serving as secretary of the church council.

Bernice worked more than 20 years as a news reporter for the Southeast Missourian at the Jackson office. In 1987, she went to work for the Cash-Book Journal newspaper in uptown Jackson. Bernice enjoyed her job. With her lifelong knowledge of Cape Girardeau County and its residents, she was instrumental in writing and editing news articles and obituaries.

Loving survivors include a son, Norman Quade Jr. of Jackson; two daughters, Cheryl (Randy) Seabaugh of Jackson, Janet (John) Penrose of Cape Girardeau; four granddaughters, Erica and Lori Quade, Kelli Seabaugh and Jennifer Penrose; and a great-granddaughter, Maddie Seabaugh.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jim Schultz officiating.

Interment will follow at St. James United Church of Christ Cemetery in Tilsit.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. James United Church of Christ or the St. James United Church of Christ Cemetery.
