VANDUSER -- Funeral for Berlin Cecil Newell of Pekin, Ill., was held Tuesday at Liberty Baptist Church in Pekin. The Rev. Tim Najpaver officiated. Burial was in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
Preston-Hanley Funeral Home in Pekin was in charge of arrangements.
Newell, 78, died Saturday, May 8, 1999, at his home.
He was born Sept. 1, 1920, at Vanduser, son of Noah Franklin and Ida Mae Upchurch Newell. He and Ida Arzella Phillips were married Feb. 27, 1947, at Morley.
Newell was a welder 32 years at Caterpillar Inc. in East Peoria, Ill., retiring Sept. 1, 1982.
He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and its Survivors Sunday School Class, and had served as an usher. He was a charter member of VFW Post 5368 at Morley.
Newell served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Dewayne Newell of Falls Church, Va., Gary Newell of Harrisonburg, Va., James Newell of Kentwood, La.; two sisters, Olean Branson of Jackson, Miss., Ollie Bowen of Marble Hill; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, three brothers, and a sister.
