NEW HAMBURG, Mo. -- Barbara Jean Kern, 78, of New Hamburg passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019, at her home. She was born Nov. 28, 1940, in New Hamburg to the late Al and Rose Westrich Kern. She was retired from Thorngate Ltd. in Cape Girardeau. She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in New Hamburg. NEW HAMBURG, Mo. -- Barbara Jean Kern, 78, of New Hamburg passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019, at her home.

She was born Nov. 28, 1940, in New Hamburg to the late Al and Rose Westrich Kern.

She was retired from Thorngate Ltd. in Cape Girardeau.

She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in New Hamburg. She was a member of St. Ann's Sodality of New Hamburg and a member of the church choir.

Barbara was a girls' softball coach and a mentor for the girls' 4-H Club in New Hamburg. She would volunteer every year on many occasions to put flags out on veterans' graves. She was a cancer survivor. Barbara also served as a parish council member for four years and as president of the council for one year.

She is survived by a son, Richard Kern of New Hamburg; three brothers, Elmer "Cotton" (Patsy) Kern, Al "Otto" (Bernice) Kern Jr. and Donald (Cheryl) Kern; and three sisters, Georgie Bennett, Charlene (Skip) Steger and Carol (Floyd) Klipfel, all of New Hamburg. She is also survived by 13 nieces and nephews and 19 great-nieces and -nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert "Duke" Kern; a sister-in-law, Rose Lee Kern; and a sister, Joan Kern.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in New Hamburg. Parish rosary will be at 7 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Bala Swamy Govindu officiating. Burial will be at St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery in New Hamburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Lawrence Catholic Church.
