SIKESTON -- Avery Anthony Abernathy, 78, of 313 Marian in Sikeston died Monday, April 27, 1992, at the Methodist Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. SIKESTON -- Avery Anthony Abernathy, 78, of 313 Marian in Sikeston died Monday, April 27, 1992, at the Methodist Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

He was born March 17, 1914, at Lutesville, the son of the late Matthew and Minnie Shell Abernathy. On Aug. 24, 1937, he married Doris Shepard at Piggott, Ark. She survives of the home.

A resident of Sikeston the past 40 years, he was a retired maintenance foreman for the Missouri Highway and Transportation Department. He also was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the U.S. Army, and he was a member of the North Acres General Baptist Church in Sikeston.

Others survivors include four daughters, Jean Schmidt, Freda Fugate and Angela Bridger, all of Sikeston, and Margie Ferrenburg of Morley; two sisters, Pauline Crums and Pearl Aeschilman both of Galatia, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston, where funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Norman Elledge will officiate; and burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sikeston.
