August A. Schott, 97, of Jackson, passed away Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, at Jackson Manor Nursing Home.
He was born Oct, 31, 1917, at Biehle, Missouri, to Joseph and Loretta Schemel Schott. He and Mildred Wingerter were united in marriage Jan. 11, 1947, in Biehle.
From 1939 to 1941, August worked as a carpenter's helper for his father and also worked in the Civil Conservation Camp in Sullivan, Missouri.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Feb. 15, 1941. He was awarded five Bronze Stars for campaigns in Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe, Northern France and Normandy and the Good Conduct Medal. He also was awarded the American Theatre Campaign Ribbon; American Defense Service Ribbon; European, African, Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon; the Victory Ribbon; and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged Nov. 9, 1945, as a Tech 5.
The remainder of his life, August worked as a mechanic at Ford Groves, the former Friedrich Used Cars, and B & B Auto Salvage, where he specialized in automatic transmissions. He retired in May 1980 and spent the rest of his life doing what he loved -- raising horses, cattle, hogs and chickens.
Loving survivors include his wife of 68 years, Mildred of Jackson; three children, Larry (Shirley) Schott, Allen (Marilyn) Schott and Mary (Dale) Woeltje, all of Jackson; two granddaughters, Tracy (Greg) Little and Jaime Dunning, both of Jackson; a grandson, Dan (Dana) Schott of Lebanon, Missouri; six great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; a step-great-great-grandson; a brother, Joe Willie Schott of St. Louis; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Alkemeyer of Perryville, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Milton; a great-granddaughter; and three brothers.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson. Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 will present an Honor Guard service at 6:30 p.m., immediately followed by parish prayers.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jackson, with the Rev. John Harth officiating.
Interment will follow at St. Maurus Catholic Cemetery in Biehle, with full military honors.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or School.
