ANNA, Ill. -- Anna Ellen Rhodes, 98, of Anna died at noon Friday, July 15, 2005, at the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna. She was born Dec. 24, 1906, daughter of William Thomas and Fannie Simpson Rhodes. She attended Tunnel Hill School and earned a teacher's certificate from Southern Illinois Normal University in 1928. ANNA, Ill. -- Anna Ellen Rhodes, 98, of Anna died at noon Friday, July 15, 2005, at the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna.

She was born Dec. 24, 1906, daughter of William Thomas and Fannie Simpson Rhodes.

She attended Tunnel Hill School and earned a teacher's certificate from Southern Illinois Normal University in 1928. In 1955, she earned a bachelor's degree in education from the College of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif.

She served in the Women's Air Corps from April 1942 to September 1945, earned the WAACC Service Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal.

She retired as a teacher in 1971, having taught in Union County schools, Santa Rosa, Calif., schools, in the Army Dependent Schools Program overseas, and in the Schaumburg/Palatine School District near Chicago.

Survivors include five nieces, Carole Watkins of Anaheim, Calif., Kay Michels of St. Charles, Ill., Billie Joan Follis of Carterville, Ill., Linda LaFonn and Sue D'Marquez, both of Anna; and two nephews, Bill Boyd of Cobden and Larry Rhodes of Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, sisters and a nephew.

Friends may call at 11 a.m. Monday at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna.

The funeral will be at noon Monday at the funeral home, with the Revs. Al Campbell and Larry Rhodes officiating. Burial will be in the Jonesboro Cemetery, with full military honors by VFW Post 3455.
