Allen E. Moss Sr., 82, of Jackson, formerly of Cairo, Illinois, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau. He was born Sept. 23, 1933, in Cairo to Cleophus and Elizabeth Lewis Moss. His father died when Allen was very young, and his mother married Ogle Lindsey when Allen was 3 years old. Ogle was a great blessing to their lives. Allen married Nellie Jane Sullivan on June 13, 1951. She survives...

Allen E. Moss Sr., 82, of Jackson, formerly of Cairo, Illinois, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Sept. 23, 1933, in Cairo to Cleophus and Elizabeth Lewis Moss. His father died when Allen was very young, and his mother married Ogle Lindsey when Allen was 3 years old. Ogle was a great blessing to their lives. Allen married Nellie Jane Sullivan on June 13, 1951. She survives.

Allen served his country in the U.S. Air Force.

He and his wife owned and operated Al's Boat and Trailer and the farmers market in Cairo. He was a city council member and mayor of Cairo, serving the community for over 20 years.

He was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Cairo and First Baptist Church of Jackson. He was active in both the Masonic Lodge and Shriners Lodge.

Allen is survived by his wife, Nellie, of Jackson; a son, Allen E. (Katie) Moss Jr.; a granddaughter, Courtney Moss; and two grandsons, Allen E. "Trey" Moss III and Thomas Sullivan Moss, all of Jackson; a niece, Bobbie Kay (Wayne) Hale of Foley, Alabama; two sisters-in-law, Lynn (Phillip) Parker of Des Moines, Iowa, and Margaret Knight of Boynton Beach, Florida; a brother-in-law, Teddy (Dee) Sullivan of Danville, Illinois; a lifelong friend, Sandra Williams of Anna, Illinois; and other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. today at Crain Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.

Funeral services will be at noon Saturday at the funeral home, with Jim Matthews and Phillip Parker officiating. Interment with full military honors will be at Green Lawn Memorial Gardens in Villa Ridge, Illinois

Memorial contributions may be made to the Missouri Veterans Home and will be accepted at the funeral home.
