Alice Georgianna Smith, 83, of Jackson, formerly of Hardy, Arkansas, died Sunday, April 23, 2017, in Cape Girardeau. Born in Pocahontas, Arkansas, on Oct. 24, 1933, she was the only child of James Franklin and Mable (Shasshere) Weaver. Early years were spent in Hardy, and she graduated from Messick High School in Memphis, Tennessee. She married George Walter Smith on Jan. 26, 1952. They had been married exactly 56 years when he passed away Jan. 26, 2008...

Alice Georgianna Smith, 83, of Jackson, formerly of Hardy, Arkansas, died Sunday, April 23, 2017, in Cape Girardeau.

Born in Pocahontas, Arkansas, on Oct. 24, 1933, she was the only child of James Franklin and Mable (Shasshere) Weaver. Early years were spent in Hardy, and she graduated from Messick High School in Memphis, Tennessee. She married George Walter Smith on Jan. 26, 1952. They had been married exactly 56 years when he passed away Jan. 26, 2008.

She also was preceded in death by her parents.

Alice is survived by five children, Ellen (Keith) Melson of Batesville, Arkansas, Mark (Anita) Smith of Jackson, David (Terri) Smith of Anchorage, Alaska, Dayna (Ray) Heustis of Huntley, Illinois, and Melissa (Bryan) Hufstedler of Thayer, Missouri; and nine grandchildren, Audrey Melson Neal and Katherine Melson, Rachel Smith Barrett and Emily Smith, Christian and Samantha Heustis and Haileigh, Drew and Cordell Hufstedler.

Alice was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Hardy and served in many capacities, including the building committee of the sanctuary. She was also a lifelong member of the Hardy Garden Club.

Visitation is from 1 p.m. to service time Tuesday in Chapel A of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

The funeral is at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with Rodney Carlson and John Lewis officiating. A committal service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Baker Cemetery near Ozark Acres, Arkansas, with the Rev. Stacy Reed officiating.
