Alice J. Bert, 89, a member of the Sereno community and Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, passed away at about noon on Aug. 20, 2015, at the Independence Care Center. Alice, the daughter of Leander Carroll and Alice Lee Carroll, was born July 17, 1926, in Brooksville, Florida.
She married John T. Bert on March 17, 1945. Alice was a homemaker and the mother of six children, Theresa (John) Bert Stevely, Patricia (Gary) Rein, Robert (Phyllis) Bert, Judith (Rajdev Basudev) Walker, Nannette Musgrave and Kenneth (Bonita Gadoury) Bert. Alice's husband and children survive her, as well as eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one sister, Caroline Smith of Homosassa, Florida.
She is preceded in death by her parents and one sister.
Alice had a long, productive, interesting and fulfilling life. She devoted her life to community and family.
Alice had an avid interest in genealogy. She wrote a book detailing the Bert family history. She also worked on the genealogies of several other families with long histories in Perry County.
Alice had a passion for sewing. She made over 100 quilts and quilt tops. Many close and distant relatives, friends and church members have quilts made by Alice Bert. She also made 50 to 75 pillows each year that the children of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church could win by playing bingo at the annual Christmas party.
Alice was a 4-H leader for 25 years. She taught dozens of Sereno children how to sew, grow flowers and vegetables and raise livestock. In honor of her contributions, Alice received a beautiful blanket with many of those children's names embroidered on it.
Alice became a local celebrity by writing a weekly newspaper column about Sereno community families and about her own family's milestones and activities.
Alice's love and dedication to her family were ever-present in her actions and words. She loved to learn. She read constantly and instilled the joy of reading and an appreciation for education in all of her children.
Alice Bert will be greatly missed by many people.
