Alfred Kurtz

Alfred Lee Kurtz, 72, of Scott City died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2019, at his home.

He was born Oct. 11, 1946, in Cape Girardeau to Richard Alfred and Mary Ellen Hoover Kurtz. He married Judy Oralene Noon on Sept. 3, 1966, in Cape Girardeau.

He was chief engineer for Archer Daniel Midland Barge Line, his family's fourth generation to work on the river, and he had previously worked at Modern Roofing.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam.

He enjoyed his hobbies of fishing, playing cards, working in the yard and gardening. He also enjoyed traveling to Tunica, Mississippi, to meet up with friends from the service to go gambling. He loved his Boar's Nest buddies. Alfred loved his family more than anything, and his favorite saying was "That's what Daddies do!"

He is survived by his wife, Judy; his mother, Mary Simms of Cape Girardeau; two sons, Randy (Amy) Kurtz of Jackson and Jeff (Michelle) Kurtz of Imperial, Missouri; three daughters, Lorie (Wayne) Umfleet of Burfordville, Debbie (Brian) Hendrix of Zalma, Missouri, and Karie (Jordon) Comer of Scott City; three sisters, Helen Wills of Shreveport, Louisiana, Linda Guthrie of Sikeston, Missouri, and Pam Howell of Cape Girardeau; 15 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, two grandchildren and a sister.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with Mark Fisher officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Lightner Cemetery in Scott City.
