ORAN, Mo. -- Alfred "Al" Charles Asmus went to meet his heavenly Father at 5:58 a.m. on Saturday, October 20, 2007, at his home in Oran.
Al was born January 5, 1935, to Adam and Frances Margaret Wiedefeld Asmus in Oran, where he later built a house next to his home place. On July 15, 1961, he was joined in marriage to his beloved wife, Sally Spalding, at St. Denis Church in Benton, Mo. She departed this life Feb. 27, 2001.
In addition to being a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, he owned and operated Asmus Sinclair Service Station for 30 years after working 10 years for his good friend Jerome Heisserer. After retiring from the service station, he proudly served his church by working as custodian for the parish and school.
He is survived by his five children, Mark Asmus, Teal Mangels, John Asmus, Tina Scherer and Tara Mason; their spouses, Carolyn Asmus, Kent Mangels, Tammi Asmus, Jeff Scherer and Gary Mason; and 10 grandchildren, David Asmus, Christopher Asmus, Kirstie Mangels, Bethany Asmus, Reece Mangels, Chase Asmus, Kaylee Scherer, Garrison Mangels, Kenzie Scherer and baby girl Mason due in March.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Clarence Asmus and August Asmus.
He is also survived by two sisters of Oran, Margie Le Grand and Agnes Landewee; and a brother, Sylvester Asmus of Chaffee, Mo.
He was a lifetime member of Guardian Angel Catholic Church, a member of St. Joseph Sodality, Knights of Columbus Council 4311, a 4th-degree member, and past Grand Knight. He was a volunteer fire chief of Oran Fire Department for more than 30 years. He was an Oran city councilman, past parish council member, past home and school member, Oran Lion's Club, Chaffee Elks Club 1810 and Oran Little League coach. He was president of Oran Housing Authority.
The visitation at Amick Burnett Funeral Chapel in Oran is scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, with rosary at 7 p.m. and Knights of Columbus prayer services at 7:15 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Revs. John Hearth and Normand Varone at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, in Guardian Angel Church.
Pallbearers will be David Asmus, Christopher Asmus, Reece Mangels, Chase Asmus, Garrison Mangels, Tim Landewee, Carl Landewee and Pat LeGrand.
Giftbearers will be Kirstie Mangels, Bethany Asmus, Kaylee and Kenzie Scherer.
