Alberta Westerhold

Alberta Westerhold, 88, of Jackson passed away Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009, at Jackson Manor Nursing Home, where she had resided since June.

She was born Oct. 27, 1920, in Jackson, to Martin and Amelia Altenthal Westerhold.

She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson and attended St. Paul Elementary School and the former Kage School in Cape Girardeau.

Alberta worked 35 years as a cashier at the former Schaper's IGA in Jackson.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid. She volunteered in the kitchen during vacation Bible school and also helped prepare bereavement lunches at the church.

She had a particular knack for embroidery and stitched many quilts. In earlier years, she enjoyed league bowling at the Jackson Lanes.

Loving survivors include two sisters, Dorothy Meier and Sarah (Leo) Schulte, both of Jackson; three nephews, Paul "Butch" and Steve Meier, both of Jackson, Tom Schulte of Gordonville; five nieces, Carolyn Bertrand of Cape Girardeau, Kathy "Katie" Summers of Gordonville, Mary Blackman, Linda Martin and Susan Rafferty, all of Jackson; 11 great-nephews; six great-nieces; three great-great-nephews; and seven great-great-nieces.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Martin Westerhold; a sister, Mabel Graden; and an infant brother, Manfred Westerhold.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Robert Henrichs officiating.

Interment will follow at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.
