Alfred Melvin Vogel, 78, of Cape Girardeau died Saturday, Dec. 31, 1994.

He was born July 28, 1916, in Pocahontas, son of Alfred Martin Vogel and Ida Marie Steiner.

On June 25, 1949, he married the former Verna Engelhart at Pocahontas. She survives.

He is also survived by three sons, David Vogel of Morrison, Colo., Mark Vogel of Boone, N.C., and Robert Vogel of Hollidayburg, Pa.; one daughter, Ann Vogel Jones of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Norma Sander of Cape Girardeau; two brothers, Richard Vogel of Cardiff by the Sea, Calif., and Leonard Vogel of Cape Girardeau; and three grandchildren.

He was a graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School, Southeast Missouri State University and the University of Missouri-Columbia.

He served in World War II as a first lieutenant in the Army. He served in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Bronze Star.

Vogel worked as a accountant and credit manager for Buckeye Gas Products Inc. and Uregas for 38 years. He was a past member of the board of directors of the Missouri LP Gas Association.

A longtime volunteer with Boy Scouts, he served as scoutmaster, a member of the Southeast Missouri Council of the Boy Scouts of America and commissioner of the Shawnee District of the Boy Scouts.

A former Eagle Scout, Vogel received the Order of Merit award in 1967 and the Silver Beaver Award, Boy Scouts highest award for adult volunteers, in 1970.

Vogel was a charter member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, where he served as a longtime Sunday School teacher and member of the board of directors, Board of Elders and Board of Social Ministry.

He was a past member of the board of directors of the Southeast Missouri Council on the Aging.

He was also a volunteer in the communications and publicity department at Southeast Missouri Hospital and served as a volunteer with the Mended Hearts cardiac recovery support group.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge.

Funeral service will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Louis Launhardt officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call today from 3 to 6 p.m. at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel.
