A Cape Girardeau man was in custody Tuesday evening in connection with a shooting that left another man in serious condition, Cape Girardeau police announced.
Deion Miguel Phillips, 18, faces charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action.
An arrest warrant issued in the case accuses Phillips of shooting the victim repeatedly.
Bond was set at $100,000.
The shooting occurred shortly before 7 p.m. Friday in the 1100 block of Cousin Street.
At the time, Sgt. Adam Glueck of the Cape Girardeau Police Department said the victim had multiple gunshot wounds and was taken by private vehicle to a hospital, where he was listed in serious condition after the shooting.
Sgt. Jason Selzer has said the shooting did not appear to be related to a homicide that occurred a few hours later in the same part of town.
Anthony Hempstead, 26, of Cape Girardeau was shot to death a few minutes after midnight Saturday in the 800 block of Jefferson Avenue, about four blocks from the site of the earlier shooting.
The back-to-back shootings -- which followed the June 20 shooting death of 34-year-old Joshua Edward Dibert near the intersection of Henderson Avenue and Good Hope Street -- prompted a community vigil last weekend.
Less than 24 hours after Hempstead's death, about 50 people gathered for a vigil at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Pacific Street to call for an end to gun violence in the area.
Last month, a 14-year-old was shot while walking in an alley in the 1000 block of Bloomfield Street.
Darin Hickey, public information officer for the Cape Girardeau Police Department, has said police responded to more than 100 calls of shots fired last year -- many of them in Zone 4, an area roughly bounded by William Street to the north, West End Boulevard to the west and Highway 74 to the south.
Three of Cape Girardeau's five homicides in 2013 occurred in Zone 4.
