If you plan to attend the Southeast Missouri State University Spanish Club Variety Show, your admission will help put foreign-language students through college.
The show, scheduled for Sunday at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., will feature such local entertainment as retired circuit court judge William Rader in a comedy routine and Dr. Dan Cotner in a piano medley.
Dr. Francis Crowley, professor of foreign language at the university, said the club hopes to raise at least $1,500 from the show. If it does, it will have accumulated $20,000 toward scholarships to be awarded yearly to foreign-language students.
Crowley said two scholarships a year more, if possible, will be awarded from interest accumulated from the $20,000. This year two students received $500 each for tuition and fees.
"Many, many organizations and individuals have contributed to this," Crowley said. "And funds have been matched by the University Foundation."
Crowley, who is retiring, said she hopes the scholarship fund will continue to grow to make possible more and bigger scholarships.
They can be awarded only to foreign-language majors or minors, she said. There are about 500 students in the foreign-language department.
"This is something I want to leave with the students," she said. "Hopefully (the fund) will grow to $100,000 someday."
The show will be held at Forrest H. Rose Theatre on campus. Admission is $2.50 for adults and $1.50 for students and senior citizens. To reserve tickets, call the foreign-language department 651-2146.
Other performers include: the Academy of Dancehearts dancers, singers Nan and Jon Robinson, blues musicians Bob Guth and Vince Wingo, singer Jeff Webster, pianists Susan Ho and Kathy Weninger, guitarist Chad Pennington and poet Victoria Vazques.
