Police chaplain shoots brother-in-law after he faked a break-in as a prank

FESTUS, Mo. -- A police chaplain shot and wounded his brother-in-law after the man faked a break-in at the chaplain's home in Festus.

Festus police chief Tim Lewis said the chaplain thought a burglar was breaking into his home last night, so he grabbed a gun and shot the intruder.

He realized too late it was his brother-in-law, a Ste. Genevieve police officer, according to media reports.

The chaplain drove the wounded man to the hospital. Police who followed the speeding car recognized the shooter as an on-call minister for the Police Department.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department is investigating.

The names of the victim and shooter have not been released.
